About the role
As an AI Research Engineer at Apex AI, you'll work at the intersection of applied research and production engineering. Our platform orchestrates AI agents across the entire product development lifecycle — from roadmap planning to deployment — and your work will directly shape how those agents reason, plan, and execute.
You'll collaborate closely with our product and engineering teams to turn research insights into features that thousands of product teams rely on every day.
What you'll do
- Design and implement AI agent architectures for multi-step task execution across product workflows
- Improve agent reliability, tool use, and reasoning capabilities through novel prompting and fine-tuning techniques
- Build evaluation frameworks to measure agent performance across diverse real-world scenarios
- Research and prototype new approaches to multi-agent coordination and context sharing
- Optimize inference pipelines for latency and cost across multiple model providers
- Collaborate with product teams to identify high-impact research directions
- Publish findings and contribute to the broader AI research community
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of experience in ML/AI research or applied AI engineering
- Strong foundation in LLMs, transformer architectures, and prompt engineering
- Experience building and evaluating AI agents or multi-step reasoning systems
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML frameworks (PyTorch, JAX, or similar)
- Track record of shipping research into production systems
- Excellent communication skills — you can explain complex ideas clearly
Nice to have
- Publications in top ML/AI venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, EMNLP)
- Experience with reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)
- Familiarity with tool-use and function-calling patterns in LLMs
- Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar agent frameworks
- Background in developer tools or product development workflows
Our stack
- Python, TypeScript, Rust (for performance-critical components)
- Multiple LLM providers via BYOAI architecture (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, open-source)
- Kubernetes, GCP, Terraform
- PostgreSQL, Redis, vector databases
Benefits
- Competitive salary ($180k — $260k) plus meaningful equity
- Remote-first — work from anywhere
- Choose your own hardware
- Unlimited learning budget (conferences, courses, books)
- 30 days paid vacation plus local holidays
- Team offsites twice a year
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
